Preparing a Car for Winter

Many winterizing treatments focus on a car’s exterior, where the bulk of the ice and snow will accumulate, but it’s also essential to consider the interior systems.

Freezing temperatures can be detrimental to a car’s overall performance. It’s crucial, therefore, to take the proper steps before winter begins to prepare a vehicle fully for the cold season. Though it may seem expensive upfront, the problems of not winterizing a car can be much worse in the long run.

Here are some ways to prepare a car for the winter:

Coating

Snow, ice, and road salt can damage a car’s exterior. As washing a vehicle may not be as easy during winter, ensuring the exterior is well-sealed beforehand is vital. There are two main options:

Coating: A strong, reliable coat of paint can last for up to three years if applied by a professional. Its hydrophobic composition prevents ice and snow from sticking to the exterior. The downside of this comprehensive coating is the time and steps it takes to apply.

Sealant: A paint sealant is a quicker method of coating a vehicle but offers a thinner layer of protection that will only last up to six months. It’s much easier to apply, though, and can even be done by hand.

Antifreeze

Many winterizing treatments focus on a car’s exterior, where the bulk of the ice and snow will accumulate, but it’s also essential to consider the interior systems. Antifreeze is a vital component in a car owner’s winter arsenal. Applying the right amount to the oil and water tanks is a good preventative step.

Tires

Switching to snow tires is one way of readying a car for the winter, but it shouldn’t stop there. Air pressure is just as crucial in allowing snow tires to use their traction properly. Air shrinks in the cold, and a ten-degree drop in temperature will cause tires to lose one psi. As such, having a portable air compressor handy is a good idea.

Tires are also as susceptible to the debris and damage of the icy roads. Tire gel offers the necessary protection, keeping the rubber hydrated and flexible. It’s also a good idea to apply sealant for tires to prevent damage from debris.

Thermostat

The thermostat is vital in regulating engine temperature and keeping the heat flowing to the car’s interior. Ensure it’s in good order to prevent the engine or interior from freezing.

Auto glass

Fluctuations in temperatures produce expansion and contraction of auto glass. Dropping temperatures stress auto glass, thereby increasing the likelihood of additional damage in areas of the glass that are already compromised. Inspect the windshield for chips or cracks and have it repaired before the cold weather sets in to minimize the chance of replacing glass.

Wipers

Wiper blades keep a windshield free from ice and snow. Heated wiper blades can effectively clear the windshield, even if installing them takes longer. No matter the weather, a reliable hydrophobic coating can keep wipers in optimal working order.

Emergency kit

Being stranded is never good, but the plummeting temperatures and frigid winter conditions can worsen things. Prepare an emergency kit for unforeseen incidents and inspect every year before winter starts. In addition to jumper cables, tire patching kits, ice scrapers, and other vehicle aids, it’s important to consider personal safety, too. The kit should include blankets, first aid kits, rations, and a working flashlight.
