Preparing the Car for Summer Road Trips

It’s a good idea to check the air pressure on the tires to ensure none have developed leaks.

It’s finally the time of year when the warm weather indicates it’s time to outline the road trip plans. Whether spending spring break at the beach or planning a summer getaway with the family, these early days are the best time to perform routine maintenance on the vehicle. As they say, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Here’s a short checklist of some things to check out before the next trip long drive:

Tire maintenance

It’s a good idea to check the air pressure on the tires to ensure none have developed leaks. Have them rotated to ensure consistent wear across the tires. Old, worn, patched, or plugged tires should be replaced immediately. Better tires give a safer, more fuel-efficient ride.

Engine maintenance

Ensure the battery holds a full charge and the oil reservoir is full. Check the owner’s manual for the frequency at which the oil should be changed. If it’s been too long, have the oil changed before embarking on a road trip. Don’t forget to check the coolant levels and air filters as well!

Glass maintenance

It may not seem like a big deal, but driving with broken auto glass can be a dangerous game. Not only is there the risk of a ticket from the local police department, but skipping the auto glass repair portion of vehicle maintenance could weaken the windshield. Windshields are not designed with cracks in mind and operate their best when no problems exist.
